Westchester Home Magazine Design Awards 2021 Finalist Best Master Bedroom Suite
This master bedroom suite was a complete gut apartment renovation for a couple moving from a single-family home. The goal was to create a space where they could retire and still have it be welcoming for their adult children. Instead of taking over the adjacent bedroom, the couple decided to keep the adjacent room for their daughter; therefore, the design needed to maximize the functionality of the relatively small master suite, while also making it feel appropriately luxurious. The bedroom only had one small closet. The renovation plans pushed the adjacent wall into the daughter’s bedroom to create a second closet. The original closet received mirror to reflect light from the side windows and visually expand the space. Ceiling molding was added to create architectural interest as this was an apartment built in the 50’s with no design detail. Floors were re-stained and new windows installed. The wife’s favorite colors are plums and lavender, so this color palette was used as the jumping off point for the space, including the extended velvet headboard that enhances a lush feeling. The modern, organic chinoiserie drapery pattern is a nod to the couple’s travels in Asia. The tiered petal-like glass discs of the chandelier relate to the drapery pattern while creating a dramatic focal point. Sheepskin throw rugs at each bedside add to the bedroom’s sumptuous feeling. A structural column could not be moved and the exceedingly shallow closet at the entry was not functional, therefore, the closet was removed and a seating/reading nook was created including lower drawers and upper cabinet storage. Across from the bench is a frosted glass pocket door added to bring more light to the master bathroom and keep circulation door-swing free. The design also includes an integrated LED step light given the apartment presented challenges in shifting the placements of the two bathrooms and a higher floor height was necessary to connect to building plumbing. The master bath marble envelops the floors and walls helping the space look more spacious. The creamy subtle movement of the marble creates an added layer of depth as well as a clean, fresh look that pairs with the vanity and linen tower’s subtle wood graining. The shell tiled accent wall and niche picks up the lavender color story from the bedroom and creates a glimmer as one moves in the calm oasis.
