ELEGANT & INVITING LIVING ROOM, Larchmont, NY: The homeowners design dream was to create a “grown-up, elegant, yet not stuffy” living room that would be comfortable enough to encourage them to stay for a while. To help accomplish this I took advantage of the working fireplace as a focal point. There was also a desire for unique touches, balancing an enduring look with a “touch of modernity” while infusing some color with earth tones.
The first priority was to ensure the furniture layout for this large space could create connection. I wanted a single person to be in the space and still feel comfortable. Three zones were created: 1) the main conversation area with a sofa placed opposite a split chaise-like sofa that allows the couple to enjoy a fire 2) reading area with wing chairs and 3) the entertainment area with buffet and bar nook at the opposite end of the fireplace. The conversation area was anchored with a modern u-shaped fixture and a large-scale wood and metal cocktail table. Ottomans were added so that the room could be adaptable for larger groups or they can be pushed under the curved concrete and wood console.
Standing lamps were added along with two table lamps. A mirror was also strategically placed across from the bay window to create a reflected light source. A custom antiqued mirror back panel was used for the built-in bookcase at the entry of the room and the bar to reflect the light from the back and side windows. Furthermore, the mirrored buffet doors also reflect light.
Warm neutral colors and white tones are the backdrop for the sophisticated teal of the cozy, velvet wing chairs and subtle patterned drapery. Accents of chartreuse pair beautifully with the jewel tones, while modern black finishes provide strong modern lines and contrast.
