Westchester Home Magazine Design Awards 2022 Finalist Traditional Kitchen
This kitchen design was a part of a first-floor gut renovation to transform multiple rooms to an open, light-filled, airy great room space. The right side of the house was reconfigured, moving the kitchen from the front of the house to the back and removing walls to create one expansive room. The client’s goal was to create a “simple, warm, comfortable, clean design” for their family. The timeless design is influenced by California coastal style. To create architectural interest and enhance the room’s character, reclaimed beams were sourced and installed at the end of the cabinet run, making them look as if they had always been there. A light, neutral palette with pale watery blue ceramic tiles and dove gray painted custom kitchen cabinetry mix with the warm wood tones of the floor and beams for a serene ambience.
Adjustable linen shaded sconces provide light above the farmhouse sink with antique pewter Waterstone faucet and water filter and Caesarstone Frosty Carrina quartz countertops. The tall pocket-door cabinet opens to a tea/coffee bar area with pull-out drawer. Below the coffee station is a refrigerator drawer for kid and guest-friendly access to drinks. The grey cerused oak wood island houses a wine refrigerator and prep sink while utilizing hidden push latch doors under the counter stool area for extra storage. The counter stools are an eclectic mix of gray backless stools and a pair of fog-colored hand-twisted lampakanai rope backed stools at the end of the island. The end stools coordinate with the head chairs of the kitchen table. Clear cone-shaped pendant lights and an organically shaped natural paper shade kitchen table pendant keep the look airy.
A separate custom sliding door buffet to hold wine and table accessories teams with the aged oak wood kitchen table expanding the functionality of the kitchen area. The couple had differences of opinion regarding including a television in the kitchen therefore, the presented solution of a mirror television with custom frame was the perfect solution; when off, the mirror reflects the beautiful space, and when desired, the Sunday football game can be seen while preparing dinner in the kitchen or lunch at the kitchen counter. Overall, the kitchen composition with beautifully layered details seeks to provide a calm, functional backdrop for busy family life.
