The intent of this living room design was to create an inviting, chic adult space that welcomes usage. The black wood floors were refinished to lighten the look of the relatively small room. The design focal point is the wood-burning fireplace with its lighted custom floating shelves and base cabinets; the left side providing storage, while the right side employs an interior metal cubby for firewood. The mantel was integrated into the millwork design using the same grey paint color. The carved metal drum ceiling light in serrated silver and the mantel sconces create layered lighting for greater ambience. The small space needed low profile yet comfortable furniture, therefore boucle upholstered slipper chairs with an open back and a bench seat sofa allow for an intimate conversation area that does not crowd. Abstract art adorns the mantel, pulling in the blue and grey colors from the patterned wool and silk area rug. A pair of cocktail tables have added storage underneath and can be moved easily to where they are needed. A large-scale graphic cut mirror helps open the space with its reflection of the outdoors and provides a moody vibe with its gray coloring. The windows are highlighted with a custom fabric valance and open woven lattice roller shades that add texture and light filtering. Black roped stools sit at the entry of the living room ready to pull into the space, while encaustic art reveals the couple’s love of the outdoors.
